Team of Distinction

1982 Lady Bulldog’s Field Hockey Team – Team of Distinction

The 1982 Lady Bulldog’s Field Hockey Team season began with the goal of defending their Division Title of the previous year. This team established the standards for future Lady Bulldogs Field Hockey Teams at Hamburg High School.

The season began with a victory and ended with an undefeated season of 12-0 to qualify for Sectional Playoffs. Hamburg was described as having a relentless offense and a stingy defense going into the playoffs. The team outscored their opponents 79 to 3. The playoffs began taking an incredible 203 shots on goal while allowing only 43 on our goalie. Goalie, Marcie Mauer was credited with 40 saves for the season. The semi-final game against Williamsville East resulted in another shutout winning 5-0. The team then entered the final game of the playoffs against Iroquois who was also an undefeated team.

The day was perfect – the field was in great shape and fans traveled to cheer on their awesome Field Hockey Team. This was by far the best game of the season due to the effective passing game which made the difference in the outcome of the game. The first half ended with only 1 goal for Hamburg to take into the second half. The team showed their explosive offense by scoring 3 more goals before the final horn. Coach Barb Miller of Iroquois conceded that the 1982 Field Hockey Team was in fact AWESOME – a huge victory in itself!

This was the Lady Bulldogs Field Hockey’s First Sectional Championship Team. There were no regionals or states to move onto at the time.  A Sectional Banner was truly earned.

Each individual on this team contributed every day. Whether it was scoring or assisting on goals  or playing great defense or moving the ball to open players, each player developed their skills as the season progressed and built a strong team of friendship and support for one another.

The offense was led by Carin Obad and Jill Jones each with 23 goals, Kriste Lyon 11, Linda Wilson 9, Maria Dunn 4, Kim Kulik 2, Julie Dauer 2, Jenn Smith, Beth Waldraff, Jean Marie Mrha, and Jody Wuertzer contributing to the goal scoring.

The strong defense of Linda Wilson, Beth Fidel, Alice Lyons, Jodi Wuertzer, Beth Waldraff, Jennifer Smith, Dana Moss, Ariadne Obad, and goalie Marcie Mauer.

We hope the success of this team inspires future Field Hockey Players at Hamburg Central Schools!
