Jim Weigel

Jim was a two-sport All Western New York performer for the Bulldogs (football and basketball). He was captain of both teams and led the hoops team to the Section VI finals. After graduation, Jim excelled at Buffalo State, setting passing records on his way to achieving Division III All-American honors. Weigel capped his great athletic career playing quarterback for the Barcelona Dragons in the World Football League in 1994-95. He was inducted into the Buffalo State Athletic Hall of Fame in 1999. Jim has coached youth teams in football, basketball, and baseball.  His favorite HHS memories include advancing to the basketball championships versus LaSalle in 1989, and taking center snaps from his teammate, the late Brian Wittmeyer.

Cherie Benz Adair

Cherie Benz Adair

Cherie, a part of the most dominant swimming team in Hamburg history, was an outstanding backstroker and sprinter who continues to hold the HHS 100 back and 50 freestyle records. Cherie qualified for the State meet in the 50 freestyle and 100 backstroke all four years of her high school career. Cherie was ECIC and Sectional champ in 1987 in the 100 backstroke with a time that stood as a Sectional record for three more years. Cherie led off Hamburg’s 3rd place finishing medley relay and also finished 5th in the 50 freestyle at the same State Championship meet. Cherie was also co-captain with Trish Griffin-Harrigan on those great swimming teams that never lost a meet during their remarkable careers. Cherie also had tremendous success at the Empire State Games, winning Gold medals in 1985, 1986 and 1989. Cherie went on to swim at Miami University (Ohio), where she won Gold at the Mid-American Conference (MAC) championships in 1990 for the 200 Free Relay and 200 Medley Relay, and in a 1992 Gold medal in the 100 Backstroke.

Dean Yacobucci

Dean Yacobucci

Dean was an outstanding three-sport student/athlete while at Hamburg. Yacobucci played nose guard on the football team, earning Division II All-Star-1st team defense honors. He also won defensive MVP in the annual Lion’s All-Star game, featuring the best players of WNY. Dean also captained the wrestling team finishing his senior year with a record of 23-1, and taking 2nd place at the Section VI finals. In his senior year, Dean won all 4 tournaments he competed in, won Director’s Key in both Football and Wrestling, and was awarded the Courier Express Kelly Award, presented to the Athlete of the Year for Division II. Besides football and wrestling, Dean also threw shot put and discus while at Hamburg. During his career, Yacobucci held the school record in discus, and currently is ranked #3 all-time in this event. After graduating from Hamburg, Yacobucci went on to earn All-Ivy Distinction in both football and wrestling at Yale. After graduating from Yale, Dean went to UB Medical School, and completed his residency at University of California at Irvine. Dean became a pediatric interventional radiologist at Children’s Hospital of Buffalo.

Thomas J. Moses, Sr.

Thomas J. Moses, Sr.

Thomas J. Moses Sr.’s service to the Hamburg community has spanned over 40 years. Under his leadership as Recreation Supervisor (1970-2002), many buildings and renovation projects were completed. The development of Glen Meadows Park, updates to the Village Swim Center, development of a Five-Year Master Plan, and major improvements to the Community Center Park and other village playgrounds are just a few of his accomplishments. Tom became actively involved in the Hamburg Schools, serving on the Community Health Council, the Grounds Committee, and the Ambassador Council. He was one of the founders of the High School EMT Program. His dedication to the Hamburg community is further evidenced by his 43 years with the Hamburg Volunteer Fire Department and numerous other service organizations. He became the Mayor of Hamburg in 2006. His commitment to the welfare of others is the hallmark of his administration and has been the motivating force of his life.

Tom Toles

Tom Toles

Tom Toles began his career at The Buffalo Courier-Express, then went on to become the editorial cartoonist for The Buffalo News, The New York Daily News, U.S. News and World Report and The New Republic. He was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for editorial cartooning in 1990. Since 2002 he has been the editorial cartoonist for The Washington Post, and is syndicated in nearly 200 publications worldwide. In addition to the Pulitzer Prize, Toles has received the National Headliners Award, the Overseas Press Club Thomas Nast Award, the John Fischetti Award, the H.L Mencken Free Press Award, and the Herblock Prize. He was named Cartoonist of the Year by Editor & Publisher magazine in 2002, The National Cartoonists Society in 2003 and The Week magazine in 2005. Toles also produced a syndicated comic strip, “Curious Avenue,” and a syndicated panel, “Randolph Itch, 2 a.m.” In 2001 Mr. Toles authored the children’s book “My School Is Worse Than Yours”.
